… This inaugural conference on African thought must thus be seen as part of the ongoing conversations that the University has embarked upon as it transforms itself. In providing a guiding framework for the conversations, UNIZULU defi nes an authentic African University as: “a university which in the fi rst instance serves the needs of an African constituency and intellectually wears the vestments of its social environment but also fundamentally embraces universal values which eschew narrow partisan sentiments. An institution which responds to the needs of the society in which it is located and helps to transform for the better the lives of the people in whose preoccupation and location it is embedded. To achieve this object the university needs to engage with the people, draw them into a creative dialogue about transformation and improvement of the existential circumstances of the population and put knowledge and its process of production at the service of the people …”
