Description

Reading the book has brought back memories of African scholars who have contributed immensely to examining the land and agrarian questions in Africa and the global South.

These scholars have been at the centre of examining how Africa’s food systems evolved and adapted over time given the socio-economic environments in which these existed. Scholars like Sam Moyo, Archie Mafeje and others, also examined the disruptions brought by colonialism and their impact on production systems of the time. These historical analyses have also examined how countries after attaining their independence and the formation of nation states addressed the land and agrarian questions.

Taking us from history to the ongoing debates, the current scholars continue the tradition, by researching the current discourse on the land and agrarian questions. They reflect on policy development and implementation in different countries in the post-independence era.

Of interest is how the various scholars in this book try to reflect how their colleagues who have written and researched these questions before would have approached these questions today.

The book serves as a good source for those who are students and researchers in the social sciences, but I would argue that the book is more relevant to implementers and policy makers as they grapple with land reforms in their countries.
